PennDOT offers winter driving aid

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation urges motorists to view a new informational video about safe winter driving.

The “Winter Operations” video is available at www.youtube.com/pennsylvaniaDOT and highlights the department’s 5,400 operators and 2,250 trucks prepared to maintain more than 40,000 miles of state roadways.

During winter, motorists should carry an emergency kit containing nonperishable food, water, first-aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cell phone charger and a small snow shovel, among other items. Motorists should tailor their kits to meet individual needs, such as baby supplies, extra medication or pet supplies.

Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com before embarking on a commute or trip.

The service is available 24 hours a day with delay warnings, weather forecasts, speed information and more than 700 real-time roadway cameras. 511PA is also available as an application on iPhone and Android devices or by calling 511 via telephone. Information is available via the “511PA” Twitter profile. ••
